This project started out as a way to keep self-teaching myself Java programming and morphed into a useful RPG tool that I hope will be a useful tool for GM's and Players alike. I'll be working on a few other Random Generators that I'll post on the site eventually.
First off, let me start by giving some background on the names. Some of the names are totally made up by me, others have been taken from various name books and websites...you know, the kind you'd look at if you were naming a baby. These names for the various races presented here are styled after what I'd use for my own campaigns.
Human, Elf and Dwarf were easy enough. Most of the names I took from a slew of different naming websites out there. For Humans I used a lot of the more common names. Elves took a lot of the 'normal' names that sounded more exotic or unusual to me. For Dwarves I used a lot of Norse names. Last names for Elves and Dwarves were largely made-up.
Gnome names came from a mishmash of sources as well as many that were made-up by me on the fly. Some of my more made-up names came from 1am brainstorming sessions so don't laugh too hard.
The 'monster' races have a lot of made up names as well. The one exeption being the Kobolds which have about 50% made-up first names and 50% Egyptian first names. Orc and Goblin names are largely made-up, but I tried to give each race a distinctive 'sound' to their names. Goblins, for instance, are largely dirty, vicious (but cowardly) creatures in my campaigns so I tried to give them names that sounded gross. Orcs on the other hand, are violent, vicious bullies in my campaigns so I tried to make up names that were more horrid sounding.
