WCB Painted Fantasy Themed Monster Miniatures

WCB Gallery Thumnail
Mini: D&D Miniature (DDM) - Greater Barghest

I had repainted this for one of the Uncommon Painting Challenges that are hosted on the Hordelings website. This was one of my first real attempts at more complex basing. I am relatively happy with how this turned out. The 'grass' on the base was the only green flock material I had at the time. It turned out looking more like moss than grass, although I don't mind that at all.

Mini: D&D Miniature (DDM) - Loyal Earth Elemental

I am particularly happy with the way this one turned out. The miniature is, in my opinion, a really dynamic sculpt. I have eventual plans to do a few other repaints of it based on a couple other ideas I have at some point.

Mini: D&D Miniature (DDM) - Elemental Wall

This magma elemental repaint did not turn out as nice as the other Magma Elemental I repainted but it is OK. I think the issue I have with it is that I didn't drybrush enough orange on before I started on the black. To me it looks less like magma because of that. I will most likely attempt another version of this one at some point to see if I can improve on it.

Mini: D&D Miniature (DDM) - Mezzoloth (modified)

This miniature came out of the booster box with a broken weapon. Since they were described with a lighter color in the D&D monster description I read anyways, I decided to salvage him with a new spear and proper color. the spear came from a Warhammer Tomb Kings Skeleton Regiment box set. In hindsight, the claws being purple I would change if I repainted him again.

Mini: Grenadier(?) - Shrieker (rebased)

This was an old vintage D&D metal miniature of a Shrieker that was given to me a while back by a friend. I am not sure if it truly is a Grenadier mini, but I believe it came from one of the old box sets. I'll update the listing if I find out otherwise. I have been wanting to repaint it for a little while now. I am exceptionally happy with how the stalk of the mushroom turned out, but the growths (mouths?) on the top of the critter didn't turn out like I had envisioned them.

Mini: D&D Miniature (DDM) - Black Woods Dryad

This is the first in a series of four dryads I am working on, one for each of the four seasons. I was experimenting with 'flowers' by using autumn foliage flock and paint. I am not entirely happy with how it turned out, but it isn't too bad I guess. The Summer version is in the works currently.

Mini: Mage Knight - Wood Golem (rebased)

I'd be hard pressed to say which Mage Knight set this came from, or it's rarity. I bought a booster a long time ago and have had the mini sitting around for a while. This guy subbed for a Umber Hulk Zombie one of our PCs had animated. When we got another mini to use for the Umber Hulk this one was retired from the table. It had a decent amount of wear so I decided to rebase it and give it some fresh paint. The pictures turned out a little blurry, but the overall effect was one I am happy with.

Mini: Reaper Dark Heaven Legends - Starmane, Unicorn (rebased)

This miniature was a commission from one of my gaming group members. Initially she had told me to paint it however I wanted to, but when I jokingly mentioned painting it as a 'Nightmare' unicorn she liked the idea so much we decided to run with it. The picture doesn't show it well, but I am particularly proud of the red on the horse where I attempted to add some (very subtle) glowing highlights from the flames. This is also my first real attempt at doing fire, but I've seen a few good tutorials on it so I was working off my knowledge of those when I painted the fire on the unicorn.

Mini: D&D Miniature (DDM) - Magma Brute

This is a repainted DDM miniature from the Dungeons of Dread expansion. I don't care as much for this sculpt, but the repaint turned out OK. I'm still happier with my first 'magma elemental' repaint of the DDM mini: Loyal Earth Elemental. Still, I may try a couple other repaints with this mini at some point.

Mini: Ral Partha - Barrel Mimic

OK, I was really excited to get this set of Mimics. I've seen this listed as a 'Chair Mimic' but it looks more like a barrel to me. I had a rough time painting this for some reason. I just couldn't get it to look OK. In retrospect I would probably go back and use a silver color metallic paint for the metal instead of a brass color. I had wanted it to look like worn brass, and it does somewhat, but the color is lost alongside the wood. The Chest Mimic (which I painted at the same time) turned out much nicer looking with the more silver colored bands of metal.

Mini: Ral Partha - Chest Mimic

I have been wanting a mimic miniature for a while now. I got these mimics (set of three) in a trade recently and I'm happy with the way this one turned out. The wood texture was hard to paint well since the detail was shallow. the drybrushing tended to cover up too much and I wound up repainting it a couple times to get the effect right.

Mini: D&D Miniature (DDM) - Galeb Duhr

This is a mini that was painted for an Against the Giants common painting challenge on Hordelings. I was trying to complete all nine commons from the AtG set, so I went with a paint scheme that I know how to do real well. I do like the result, especially the eyes.

Mini: D&D Miniature (DDM) - Fomorian (modified)

This is a modification to the Fomorian miniature, actually it involved cutting up two of them. The ball and chain was created using the same technique as I used in my Two Headed Troll. The net was created from some old fish netting I had that I found at a garage sale. The snow, ice and frost was created using the baking soda technique for the snow, clear resin 'rocks' that I created using a mold I have from a hobby store, and some 'snow' flocking material for the frosted look on the metal. The weights on the end of the net come from a couple of Painsmash Dreamblade miniatures.
